International Conference on Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria 2005

The Foundation organised and hosted a highly successful International Conference on Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria. The theme of the confence was Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria: Challenges & Prospects. The creme of Nigerian Political elites attended the one-day event. It was held at the Imperial College, London - South Kensington Campus, on Saturday 25th June, 2005.

The event was attended by the following:

General (rtd) Muhammadu Buhari. General Buhari, former Head of State and the Presidential Candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples' Party (ANPP) in the 2003 general election. He was the Special Guest of Honour and his keynote speach was on Challenges of Democracy in Nigeria. A copy of his presentation can be downloaded from here.

Chief (Dr) Alex Ekwueme. Chief Alex Ekwueme, Elder Statesman and the First Civilian Vice President of Nigeria. He was the Chairman of the Conference as well as paper presenter. Alhaji (Sir) Abdulqadir Balarabe Musa. Alhaji Balarabe Musa is the former Governor of old Kaduna State and Chairman, Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CCNP). He is also the Chairman of Peoples' Redemption Party (PRP). His paper titled Effective Opposition as an Antidote Against Abuse of Power by the Executive in Nigeria can be downloaded from here.

Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau. Mallam Shekarau is the Executive Governor of Kano State. His paper titled Leadership as a Trust: Its role in Sustaining a Viable Democratic Culture in Nigeria can be downloaded from here.

Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Senator Bola Tinubu is the Executive Governor of Lagos State. His paper titled Constitutional Responsibilities of the State and the Federal Government in the Federal Republic of Nigeria can be downloaded from here.

Chief Mike Ahamba (SAN). Chief Ahamba is a legal luminary and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was the lead counsel to General Muhammadu Buhari, former presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in the 2003 election. AVM Mukhtar Muhammad. AVM Mukhtar is the former Executive Governor of old Kaduna State and proprietor of Radio Freedom, Kano. His contribution titled The Need for Home-Grown Democracy can be downloaded from here.

Alhaji Adamu Modibbo. Alhaji Adamu is the ANPP Gubanatorial Candidate for Adamawa State in the 2003 election. His contribution titled If Peaceful Change is Impossible, Violent Change is Inevitable can be downloaded from here.

Dr Usman Bugaje. Dr Bugaje is He is a member of the House of Representatives reprsenting Kaita/Jibiya Federal Constituency. His contribution titled Failure of the National Assembly can be downloaded from here.

Professor Munzali Jibril. Professor Munzali is the former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC). His contribution titled Dictatorship Must Be Resisted can be downloaded from here.

Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar Rimi. Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar Rimi, former Communications Minister and Governor of old Kano State. Alhaji Rimi chaired the Morning Session.

Chief Adebisi Akande. Chief Adebisi Akande is the former Governor of Osun State and Chairman AD. Chief Akande chaired the Evening Session.

Also in attendance serving and former Senators and members of the House of Representatives like Senator Abu Ibrahim, Hon. Lawal Garba and Alhaji Buba Galadima, academicians like Professor Ahmed Jalingo, Dr Junaidu Muhammed and Dr Bashir Kurfi.
